The status decision sits with the trust
Since 2017, public-sector bodies determine IR35 status. Most senior interim roles are deemed inside IR35, so pay is taxed at source via an agency or umbrella. Budget on a gross-of-tax basis and expect a Status Determination Statement.
Roles come through official routes
Senior non-clinical temporary staff are typically engaged via frameworks — e.g. NHS Workforce Alliance and Crown Commercial Service agreements for non-clinical and fixed-term staff. Off-framework hiring is the exception, not the rule.
Rates are benchmarked, not open
NHS agency price caps and pay controls shape what a role can pay. Rates are more constrained than the private market, and transparency is expected — we quote within the applicable benchmark, never above it silently.
Know the true cost
Agency and umbrella fees plus VAT sit on top of the worker rate. For a hiring body, the framework rate card sets the ceiling; for a candidate, umbrella deductions materially change take-home. We set both out before you commit.
